Burley B. Mitchell, Jr. who gave up a Court of Appeals Seat to join Gov. Jim Hunt's Cabinet 2^ years ago, was appointed by Hunt Monday to the State Supreme Court. Mitchell, 41, fills a seat being given up Jan. 31 by Associate Justice J. Frank Huskins, who is retiring. The third moderate earthquake to hit southeastern Canada in three days rattled dishes and rocked buildings Monday across a six-state stretch of New England. Numbing temperatures and high winds hit Western North Carolina Sunday night and Monday, closing schools and sending people scrambling for fuel oil. In the north, a new blizzard walloped Buffalo, N.Y. with 25 inches of snow. Saturday, Jan. 16tn is the open house for Tryon Federal’s Columbus Office. The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. There are a number of prizes that someone will win. Sunday the Cresta Azul Continued On Back Page Seeking 3rd Term Sheriff Boyce Carswell On Monday, January 4, Sheriff Boyce L. Carswell became the first to officially file for the office of Sheriff of Polk County. Mr. Carswell, who is seeking his third term of office, has had much experience in law enforcement, having been a deputy and serving as Chief Deputy for eight (8) years before being elected to the office of Sheriff in 1974. He stated he is very pleased with the progress made in the department under his supervision. Many new programs have begun and are now being carried out that were not available to the citizens of the county before. He stated that there is now a twenty- four hour service provided by the department with deputies on duty at all times. He said that the Community Watch Program has been very instrumental in reducing the number of Break- Ins in the county. He stated that C^ 1° Service for Senior Citizens has been very successful, as has the Home Watch Service provided by the Continued On Back Page Annexation Underway The Tryon Town Council met Monday night at the Town Hall. The council passed a resolution of intent of annexation. The Annexation will extend to the South Carolina line with the railroad as the boundary line; the New Market Road area was deleted from the original study. Jackson Street Extension will be included in the annexation plan. Also included as originally scheduled will be the Gillette Woods area to include East Park Drive, Dogwood Trail and Hogback Mountain Road up to Dug Hill Trail. Also included will be Thermal View Heights, Country Club Heights and Barnet Southern. The city limits will go jut Hwy. 176 to Pacolet River oridge on both sides of the highway and then go along the river to the Lynn bridge. From here it will go back to the present city limits and include the Wilderness Road and Hwy. 108 area. The council will meet tonight at 7:30 at the Town Hall to officially adopt a resolution of intent to annex with a description of the areas to be considered. On Tuesday, Jan. 26th, the Council will review the annexation report and the report will be made available for public inspection. On Wed., Feb. 10th at 7:30 p.m. the Council will hold a public hearing on the Annexation at the Tryon Elementary School Cafeteria. On Wed., Feb. 17th the Council will considei the Continued On Back Page Alan Leonard Announces For District Attorney Alan Leonard Alan Leonard of Columbus has announced as a Democratic candidate for the office of District Attorney for the Twenty- Ninth Judicial District which is composed of Henderson McDowell, Polk, Rutherford and Transylvania counties. Leonard, 34, is a native of Polk County and attended the Tryon City Schools. He has served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Twenty-Ninth District since graduating from the Universitv of North Carolina School of Law in 1975.
